The Rainy Season
Growing grapes in Arizona might seem odd to many people. Most people think all of Arizona is a desert. Most Arizonans think the same thing. SE Arizona is Hidden Gem. We sit at an altitude of 4300. Even in the middle of summer with daytime temps in the 90’s our evening are usually in the 60’s or low 70’s. During the summer we have a monsoon season. It usually starts in late June and continues through September. It brings much needed rain, to fill our aquifers, and nourish the flora and fauna. That includes the southern wine grape region known as the Willcox AVA. Although we love and need the the rain it does reek havoc. Sometimes the storms are very violent and cause a lot of damage. Downed vines from 50 mph winds. Plant destruction from hail and fruit rot from too much rain. This morning I am sitting in my kitchen with the doors open listening to the beautiful sound of the rain on the metal roof. I am relaxing, drinking a cup of hot tea. The sun is not up yet. The rooters are telling it is morning. It is very peaceful and I love the calmness. Unforunately, I am supposed to be picking grapes. Such is the life of a farmer. This morning I will relax and breath in the aroma of the rain. I will pick grapes another day.
XOXO,
Michelle
